Throughout history, playing cards have been inseparable companions in moments of leisure and entertainment. Beyond their use in games, playing cards are small works of art that reflect the culture and style of their time. Each deck tells a story, and each design transports us to different historical and cultural moments. Today, I bring you a new and wise fusion of history and modernity in the form of playing cards: OSPREY & GOSHAWK.
Alex Haines, an emerging designer from Manchester, England, has created a masterpiece that pays homage to vintage playing cards. With meticulous attention to detail and a passion for the craft, Alex presents a collection that combines the classic with the contemporary. Each card is hand-illustrated, capturing the essence of the great card houses of yesteryear, but with a modern twist that makes them unique and timeless. His dedication to the art and his ability to blend tradition and innovation are reflected in every stroke and color choice.
The campaign features two different decks: Osprey No. 2 (blue) and Goshawk No. 3 (red). Although unique in appearance, both decks share the same design philosophy and inspiration, making this set a gem for any collector.
Â
Â
Both decks share the same court cards, hand-drawn in shades of cobalt blue, gold, and vintage red. Their design maintains a familiar yet unique look. The characters, with their regal and detailed appearance, evoke the grandeur of classic cards, but with a fresh and modern twist.
Â
Â
The aces in both decks receive special treatment. In the Osprey No. 2, the Ace of Spades features a majestic osprey in full flight, framed by the first rays of the sun. The other aces, each with unique decorative details, complement the theme of the deck. In the Goshawk No. 3, the Ace of Spades presents a vintage illustration of the goshawk, while the other aces also feature distinctive adornments, ensuring an impeccable overall aesthetic.
Â
Â
The numbered cards in both decks follow a traditional style but with a modern touch. With slightly smaller indices and a design that occupies the entire card, these cards are perfect for use in games and card magic effects, maintaining the perfect balance between usability and elegance.
Â
Â
The back design is a crucial element in any deck, and these do not disappoint. Both decks feature a traditional design illustrated entirely by hand, with filigree work and classic motifs. In addition to the difference in color (blue for Osprey No. 2 and red for Goshawk No. 3), there is a small detail that demands the attention and keen observation of top ornithologists to discover each species in a small profile bust. This design is not only beautiful but also meant to look spectacular when fanned, adding an extra visual element during use.
Â
Â
Both decks have their own jokers, one in color and one in black and white, as well as a special extra card with a revealing text.
Â
Â
The tuck boxes of both decks are an extension of the art they contain. Printed inside and out on premium matte cardstock, each tuck box features a detailed design and old-school characteristics. The custom perforated seals in shades of orange and green perfectly complement the plaid pattern on the inside, making the opening of the tuck box an evocative experience.
Â
Â
Additionally, for those seeking a more special and exclusive presentation, the campaign offers a vintage tin case that houses both decks. With a design that emulates old tobacco tins, this case not only protects the cards but also adds an element of nostalgia and charm. Every detail, from the simulated scratches to the retro color palette, is carefully thought out to offer an authentic and charming experience.
Â
Â
The printing of the decks will be handled by Legends Playing Card Company, a name synonymous with quality and integrity. They will print the cards on their pre-crushed stock with a Classic Finish and use thick matte paper for the tuck boxes.
Furthermore, you can complement your collection with the Imported Playing Cards deck, designed by Alex in the summer of 2023. Initially self-funded, this deck has received praise and gained loyal followers, becoming a benchmark in the card community.
